Living In Brazil

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

Brazil can be a great place to live, but it can also be a dangerous place, just like anywhere in the world. You just have to follow the basic principles.

Favella overlooking Rio De Janeiro
Favella Over Rio De Janeiro, There Are Many Places Like This In Brazil As In Other Parts Of The World

No matter where you go in the world there will always be places that the poorer population live, these are normally the places that have high crime rates and people are living in close proximity to each other. In Brazil these places are called favellas.

Recently they have even started tourist trips inside some favellas in Rio De Janeiro, but these trips are not for everyone and i include myself in that category.

If you are thinking about living in Brazil no matter where you decide to settle there will be a favella not to far way, just remind yourself not to go there and avoid going there, as some of them do not tolerate outsiders venturing into their vicinity.

It has been known for the GPS car navigation system to route people into favellas, my advice don't go there and always have a back up navigation system on your phone.

So wheres the best place to live for an expat:

The answer to this is whats called a Condominium. Its basically a community which could be gated or fenced in, and has security patrolling it, these could be armed or unarmed. They offer security to expats and are the preferred place of living for many people in Brazil. Not only for expats but also for local population as well.

Gated Condominium Barra Da Tijuca, The Prefered Place To Live Is A gated Community

The above is an example of a gated community. This is in a place called Barra Da Tijuca, which is close to Rio De Janeiro, about 30 minutes drive.

In order to get in you have to have a pass, the area will be patrolled by security and if you want to visit, the security will call the person you are visiting to ensure you who you say you are. You can find these communities throughout Brazil and they are the safer option.

I live in a condominium which is patrolled by security, with one difference in that it is also a public area where people can go and visit the beach if they feel the need to go there. However in Brazil currently most beaches are now out of bounds for sunbathing and enjoying yourself.
